Google announces new Nexus tablets, smartphone | Internet & Media – CNET News

Google announced lots of new hardware today via blog post, after an event in New York was canceled in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy. The big items:

  • The Nexus 4 smartphone, developed with LG. It features a quad-core processor, a 4.2-inch display, and a wireless charging feature that lets you power the phone by setting it down on a charging service. It runs Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and a feature called Photo Sphere for creating 360-degree panoramas. The phone goes on sale Nov. 13 for $299.
  • The Nexus 7 now comes in new Wi-Fi models that are 16GB (for $199) and 32GB (for $249). Google also is making a version available with an HSPA+ cellular connection — 32GB for $299. It’s on sale Nov. 13.
  • The Nexus 10 tablet, developed with Samsung, offers what Google calls the highest-resolution screen in the tablet marketplace at 300 pixels per square inch. That 2560 by 1600 pixel display will still get nine hours of video playback, Google says. And it has an account-switching feature that lets multiple users share the tablet more easily. The 16GB model goes for for $399; the 32GB model costs for $499. It’s available Nov. 14.

Archos launching 8-inch Android 3.2 tablet for $299

Archos will launch two Android 3.2 tablets this month, the company announced today. The Archos G9 line will come in both 8-inch and 10-inch screen variations, with the base model priced at $299.

The 8-inch 1024×768 resolution G9 tablet is named the Archos 80, and the base version will come with 8GB of flash storage with a 1GHz Cortex A9 dual-core processor. The larger models of the Archos 80 and the 10-inch Archos 101s with a 1280×800 screen resolution will have 1.5GHz OMAP 4 dual-core processors. The tablets will also be somewhat thick and heavy: the Archos 80 is 0.46 inches thick and 17 ounces, and the Archos 101 is 0.5 inches and just under 1.5 pounds.

The Archos G9 tablets will also feature a USB port that can accommodate an Archos 3G stick for access to data networks (the tablets are also WiFi-capable). Both models will have a front-facing camera capable of 720p video, and have batteries rated for 10 hours of Internet browsing and 7 hours of video playback time.

Samsung is adding another personal media player to the market. The company will unveil a new Galaxy Player next month at the Consumer Electronics Show, according to Samsung Hub.

The Android-based music player will be similar to the Galaxy S phone, but without a cellular connection. Samsung Hub said that the player will run on the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. It will be 9.9mm thick with a 4-inch Super Clear LCD screen with WVGA resolution. It has a dual-facing camera for video chatting, with a 3.2-megapixel camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front.

Samsung Hub said that the device will also have built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0.

Included in the Galaxy Player are a few media-friendly features, such as SoundAlive audio enhancement technology and HD video playback. It also has a microSD card slot, and users will have access to Samsung Apps and the Android Market.
