Will American’s New Boarding Process Work? It Failed at Virgin America. – Forbes

Give American Airlines credit for trying a new method to board passengers more quickly. Airlines constantly tinker with the boarding process, and this time American says it has found a way to cut an average of two minutes from the 40 minutes to 45 minutes that it takes to board a narrowbody aircraft. American narrow bodies take off about 3,000 times a day, so two minutes per flight is a lot of time.

American’s new method involves allowing passengers who are traveling light, with only a carry-on item that fits under the seat in front of them, to board early, before “group two.”  The policy was implemented systemwide on Thursday, after testing that began several months ago in seven cities.

The intent is to improve on-time performance, said Kevin Doeksen, American director of customer planning, in an interview. American, like all airlines, boards its premium passengers first. “To have this group of customers follow the premium passengers basically shortens the buildup (involving) premiums looking for bin space,” he said. “This group is very quick because once they get on board, they are not looking for bin space. They board the aircraft and find seating and sit down.”

Airline fees: Airlines collect $3.5 billion in baggage fees in 2012 – chicagotribune.com

U.S. airlines collected nearly $3.5 billion in baggage fees last year, the government said Tuesday, continuing a steady improvement in the critical revenue stream that started just five years ago. That was up from $3.36 billion collected in 2011. The nations largest airlines also reported $2.55 billion in reservation change fees — that $150 or $200 customers pay to change the time or date of travel.  Thats up from $2.38 billion in 2011. United was second to Delta in amount taken in from baggage fees last year, more than doubling its collection. The Chicago airline, the worlds largest, took in $705,547 last year from bag fees, up from $276,817 in 2011. Reservation fee revenue at the airline also soared, rising faster than nearly all its major competitors. United reported reservation fee revenue of $660,943 last year, double the $324,129 it collected in 2011. United has already broadly raised its reservation change fees this year.

Lion Air jet crashes into sea in Bali; 45 hurt – Yahoo! News

All 108 passengers and crew survived after a new Lion Air jet crashed into the ocean and snapped into two while attempting to land Saturday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, injuring up to 45 people.

The injured were taken to several different hospitals for treatment, but there appeared to be no serious injuries, said airport spokesman Alfasyah, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. There were three foreigners on board — two Singaporeans and a French national — all of whom suffered slight injuries.

TV footage showed police and rescuers using rubber boats to evacuate the 101 passengers and seven crew members. The Boeing 737 could be seen sitting in the shallow water with a large crack in its fuselage.

Officials initially said the plane overshot the runway before hitting the water, but a spokesman for Lion Air, a low-cost carrier, said at a news conference that the plane crashed about 50 meters (164 feet) ahead of the runway. The weather was cloudy with rain at the time of the incident.
