NVIDIA Invites Developers Into The “Tegra Zone” | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Chipmaker NVIDIA today announced a new, supplementary app store for Android phones running their dual-core Tegra 2 chipset, such as the LG Optimus 2X. Tegra Zone will allow consumers to discover and download higher-quality, more powerful games than are currently available in the Android Market.

The company also showed off a “reference implementation” of Skype HD video calling on Android tablets. Verizon Wireless is widely expected to announce a version of Skype for Android phones which includes video chat tomorrow morning.

NVIDIA is in an enviable position today, and a tough one. The Tegra 2 chip is the first of its kind, months ahead of Cortex-A9-based competitors soon to come from Qualcomm, TI, Freescale and Samsung. But the company can’t showcase some of this week’s top devices today, because carriers and OEMs are saving the gadgets for their own press conferences later during CES.

The smartphone is a 4.8-inch touch-screen design with a high resolution 1,024×480-pixel resolution display. It comes with front- and rear-facing cameras, as well as an LED flash and an expected launch date of April, 2011.

We have few details on this system. We know its name, Iconia; that its screens are 14-inches; and that Acer is targeting a December release date. It runs Windows 7, comes with a pop-up virtual keyboard and an interactive icon touch wheel. Though we’ve seen dual-screen designs before, particularly the Toshiba’s Libretto, the concept always at least looks novel.

10-inch and 7-inch Android tablets

No names or prices for these products either, but the 10-inch model in particular boasts some impressive specs. The unit is powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 2 graphics chip, and supports full 1080p resolution. We would be skeptical about trying to cram 1080p content on such a small display, but an included HDMI output all of a sudden makes the 10-inch unit a competitive content delivery device for your TV. It comes with multitouch support, of course, as well as front- and rear-facing cameras.

The dual core Qualcomm chip-based 7-inch model is scaled down from the 10-inch unit in both size and capability, although Acer also boasted of its Flash 10.1 support.

Google Chrome tablet could hit market by Black Friday – CSMonitor.com

HTC, the manufacturer of a range of popular smartphones, including the EVO 4G, is making a tablet computer for Google, and it could hit by Black Friday this November, just in time for the holiday rush. That’s the word from the blog Download Squad, which says the HTC tablet will run Chrome OS, Google’s forthcoming open-source operating system.

If the folks at Download Squad have their facts in order – their item is sourced to an anonymous insider – a Google tablet would provide a welcome alternative in the tablet market, which is currently dominated by the Apple iPad. According to Lee Matthews at Download Squad, the HTC-made tablet will be “heavily subsidized” by Verizon, and “substantially cheaper” than the iPad.

The Google tablet, Matthews continues, will be “based on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform and sport a 1280×720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM, minimum 32GB SSD, WiFi/Bluetooth/LTE connectivity, GPS, webcam, and possibly expandable storage via a multi-card reader.” Translation: This computer would be packing a series punch.
