Dreamliner set to fly in a week as Boeing fixes battery | Reuters

BA.N) began installing reinforced lithium-ion batteries on five grounded 787 jets in Japan on Monday, starting a process that should make the first commercial Dreamliners ready to fly again in about a week.

Boeing’s Dreamliners have been grounded since regulators in the United States and elsewhere ordered all 50 planes out of the skies in mid-January after batteries on two of them overheated. U.S. regulators approved a new battery design on Friday.

The grounding has cost Boeing an estimated $600 million, halted deliveries and forced some airlines to lease alternative aircraft. Several airlines have said they will seek compensation from Boeing, potentially adding to the plane maker’s losses.

The first five jets to receive the new strengthened battery system all belong to All Nippon Airways (9202.T), the airline that launched the first commercial Dreamliner service.

United – This Is NOT “Any Way to Run an Airline” – Forbes

The good professors at Wichita State University (a final four contender as U.S. basketball fans know) and Purdue released their 2013 Airline Quality Rating.  United Airlines came in dead last.

To which United responded that they simply did not care.  Oh my.

Interestingly, this study is based wholly on statistical performance, rather than customer input.  The academics utilize on-time flight performance, denied passenger boardings, mishandled bags and complaints filed with the Department of Transportation.  The analysis does not even begin to explore surveying customers about their satisfaction.  Anyone who flies regularly can well imagine those results.  Oh my.

How to react to worsening quality stats?

So how would you expect an innovative, adaptive growth-oriented company (think like Amazon, Apple, Samsung, Virgin, Neimann-Marcus, Lulu Lemon) to react to declining customer performance metrics?

They might actually change the product, to make it more desirable by customers.

They might hire more customer service representatives to identify customer issues and fix problems quicker.

They might adjust their processes to achieve higher customer satisfaction.

They might train their employees to be more customer-oriented.

But, United decidedly is not an innovative, adaptive organization.  So it responded by denying the situation.  Claiming things are getting better.  And talking about how it is spending more money on its long-term strategy.

American Airlines to expand service from Los Angeles hub – Yahoo! Finance

(Reuters) – AMR Corp’s (AAMRQ.PK) American Airlines on Wednesday said it plans to expand service from Los Angeles, one of its five major U.S. hubs, by adding flights to seven cities this summer.

American, which plans to merge with US Airways Group Inc (LCC.N) and form the world’s biggest carrier, said the new destinations from Los Angeles include Pittsburgh; Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; and Hartford, Connecticut.

The carrier also said it plans to add service to nine new destination from Los Angeles overall this year. Service from Los Angeles to Sao Paulo is due to begin later this year pending U.S. government approval of American’s application to add additional flights to Brazil from the United States.

In April, American began flying to Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, from Los Angeles.
