Boeing Is Moving Ahead With Updated 777 – NYTimes.com

Boeing’s sales force is starting to pitch airlines and jet leasing companies on an updated, larger version of its 777 passenger jet, a crucial step toward winning approval from Boeing’s board to build the plane, Boeing officials said on Wednesday.

The company plans to add lightweight carbon-composite wings and new engines to the popular model to take advantage of technologies that it developed for its 787 Dreamliner and to cut fuel usage by perhaps 20 percent.

Boeing’s board approved the move to offer customers details about the capabilities and pricing of the plane. The decision suggests that the long-awaited redesign is close to becoming a reality.

Once several customers sign up, Boeing officials will go back to the board later this year for formal approval and money to start the project, known as the 777X.

Jet Airways (JET.NS) will sell a minority stake to fast-growing Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways for 20.6 billion rupees (roughly $379 million) after months of negotiations, giving a lift to India’s embattled aviation industry.

The investment would be the first by an overseas operator in an existing Indian carrier since the country relaxed ownership rules in September to allow foreign carriers to buy up to 49 percent in local airlines, which face stiff competition and high operating costs.

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected on Friday to approve Boeing’s plans to fix the batteries on its new 787 Dreamliner jets, a decision that could soon allow the planes to return to service after being grounded for more than three months.

People briefed on the matter said the F.A.A. administrator, Michael P. Huerta, and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood were satisfied that Boeing’s changes would virtually eliminate concerns that the lithium-ion batteries could erupt in smoke or fire.

Their decision could enable the innovative planes to begin flying again in May after they are refitted with more insulation between the battery cells and a new system for venting smoke or hazardous gases out of the planes.

Aviation analysts said the problems had cost Boeing hundreds of millions of dollars and slowed its progress in fielding the planes, which reduce fuel costs by 20 percent and have been in great demand by the airlines.
