Airline lost your luggage? Track it on a map with this cellular device | Ars Technica

Dealing with an airline that’s lost your luggage and doesn’t even know what city it’s in is always a frustrating experience. One startup at the Consumer Electronics Show says it has the answer: a $50 cellular device that sits in your luggage and pinpoints its location.

The product is called Trakdot and was made by a company called GlobaTrac, which says it’s in a pilot production run and will be sold to consumers in March. The device will cost $50 and require a $12 yearly charge to use the service, which lets you track the device on a website and get text message alerts about your luggage’s location.

Turkish Airlines seeks to create hub serving Asia and Europe | South China Morning Post

Turkish Airlines is on a rapid growth path as it seeks to create a transport hub serving Asia and Europe.

Helped by proactive government policies and the country’s location midway between the two major markets, the carrier has embarked on an expansion programme to grow its fleet to 375 aircraft by 2020 and its service network to more than 200 international destinations.

Fresh from placing orders for 35 wide-bodied aircraft two months ago, Turkish Airlines will order more than 100 narrow-bodied planes in the first quarter of next year, as a key part of its plan to grow its fleet, according to chief executive Temel Kotil.

“We will double our daily departures to 2,000 by 2020 as our global network continues to grow,” Kotil said.

To support this expansion, Turkey is building a huge new airport in its economic heart of Istanbul designed to eventually manage 150 million passengers a year.

Why Apple pulled the plug on Google Maps – Apple 2.0 – Fortune Tech

Unbeknownst to me, I’ve been feeding geographical information into Google’s (GOOG) mapping database for years — searching for addresses, sharing my location, checking for traffic jams on Google Maps. Google, for its part, has been scraping that data for every nugget of intelligence its computers can extract. Without consciously volunteering, I’ve been participating in a massive crowdsourcing experiment — perhaps the largest the world has ever seen. Who knows what I might have been teaching Google Maps if I’d been navigating the surface of the planet with an Android phone in my pocket?

Apple (AAPL), by building its much-loved (and now much-missed) iPhone Maps app on Google’s mapping database, has been complicit in this Herculean data collection exercise since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007. The famous Google cars that drive up and down the byways of the world collecting Street View images get most of the attention, but it’s the billions upon billions of data points supplied by hundreds of millions of users that make Google Maps seem so smart and iOS 6′s new Maps app seem so laughably stupid.
