WorldPay: 1.5% of Airline Online Booking Revenue Lost to Fraud – MarketWatch

Globally, 66% of airline merchants are seeing fraud levels stay the same or increase as they lose 1.5% of booking revenue to fraudulent transactions, according to the global Perfect Passenger Payment insights report, commissioned by WorldPay. Worryingly, this could be set to increase, with 29% of airlines reporting that incidents of fraud have risen in the past year.

The good news for airlines is that customers are happy to accept a robust screening process when buying tickets online. 71% of consumers would prefer a slower payment process with more rigorous security checks than a faster process with fewer checks.

The global study surveyed 51 airline merchants including low cost, regional and global airlines and 4,500 consumers from the US, UK, China, Japan, Brazil, Finland, Spain, Germany and France to explore views on the online booking process for buying airline tickets.

AFP: US airline agent made $1 million scamming travelers

alk about air sickness. A former Continental Airlines sales agent made a million dollars in a fraud that preyed on bewildered passengers, US prosecutors said Tuesday.

The accused, Victoria Scardigno, pleaded guilty to scamming travelers at Newark Liberty International Airport by selling them phony vouchers compensating for cancelations and other travel nightmares.

Scardigno stole real vouchers from Continental, but then sold them pretending they were redeemable for a round-trip ticket anywhere in the world — in many cases to Israel. Continental offers no such program.

When customers began trying to obtain the promised tickets, Scardigno sometimes obliged by using some of her ill-gotten proceeds to make the purchase and dampen suspicions, prosecutors say.

Most, though, were unable to redeem their fake vouchers and in the meantime, Scardigno allegedly paid off her debts and went shopping in Louis Vuitton and Coach.

Airline scam ‘unlike anything we’ve seen before’

An airline ticketing scam duping major airlines and passengers is so sophisticated it’s “unlike anything” fraud police have ever encountered.

The scam was one of two credit card-based schemes operating out of South Africa and Vietnam that were uncovered by Queensland police.

However police have refused to reveal how many Queenslanders have been conned by the scammers.

In the highly sophisticated scheme, the fraudsters used stolen credit cards to book legitimate tickets on international flights, before selling them online for a fraction of the usual cost.

Several websites involved in the scam included www.cheapflightsonly.net, www.onlycheapflights.net and www.cheaper-flights.net.au, and www.flisave.com.

In one case, scammers sold a $15,000 first class return ticket to the United Kingdom to one Queensland traveller for just $2000.
