Aer Lingus Confirms Boeing 757 Deal to Boost Transatlantic Offering :: Routesonline

Republic of Ireland national carrier Aer Lingus has confirmed it has reached an agreement to damp lease three Boeing 757-200s to expand its transatlantic activities during the first half of 2014.  The aircraft will be acquired via Air Contractors and the first jet is expected to enter service in January 2014 with all three aircraft in operation by next summer.  The details of the anticipated deal were revealed during the Aer Lingus Group interim management statement for the period from January 1, 2013 to March 31, 2013, representing the first quarter of the Group’s 2013 financial year.

The airline remains tight-lipped over its operational plans for the 757s and simply says they will operate in the North Atlantic market, but the expansion of a previous interline partnership with US low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways into a full blown codeshare agreement earlier this year will support its strategy in the US market.  It is rumoured that the 757s will be based at Shannon Airport and will be used to expand the carrier’s existing offering, increasing the existing seasonal services to Boston and New York and potentially freeing up a larger Airbus A330-200 to operate from Dublin, where demand is stronger.

Turkish Airlines seeks to create hub serving Asia and Europe | South China Morning Post

Turkish Airlines is on a rapid growth path as it seeks to create a transport hub serving Asia and Europe.

Helped by proactive government policies and the country’s location midway between the two major markets, the carrier has embarked on an expansion programme to grow its fleet to 375 aircraft by 2020 and its service network to more than 200 international destinations.

Fresh from placing orders for 35 wide-bodied aircraft two months ago, Turkish Airlines will order more than 100 narrow-bodied planes in the first quarter of next year, as a key part of its plan to grow its fleet, according to chief executive Temel Kotil.

“We will double our daily departures to 2,000 by 2020 as our global network continues to grow,” Kotil said.

To support this expansion, Turkey is building a huge new airport in its economic heart of Istanbul designed to eventually manage 150 million passengers a year.

Google Street View maps the Grand Canyon with camera-backpacks – SlashGear

Google has taken to the Grand Canyon with unwieldy backpacks to gather Street View photography, continuing its expansion of Google Maps and cocking a further snook at Apple’s upstart iOS rival app. The Street View team is sporting Trekker backpacks, Google writes, complete with bulbous 360-degree cameras that can gather imagery from all angles simultaneously.

Trekker is controlled via an Android smartphone but is generally autonomous, snapping shots as the wearer wanders around. Although Google’s Street View photography cars have become a more frequent sighting on roads – Google added 250,000 more miles of coverage earlier this month, for instance – the backpack system is slower but allows for terrain not usually accessible to be recorded.
