JetBlue Chief Seeks Broader, Deeper International Airline Links – Bloomberg

JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU) Chief Executive Officer David Barger said the U.S. discount carrier will introduce one or two two-way code-share agreements this year as it expands international ties to feed its route network.

The first of such deals will emerge from one of six existing code-shares with foreign airlines, Barger said today in an interview at the CAPA Centre for Aviation conference. South African Airways may be the inaugural partner, he said in Powerscourt, Ireland.

JetBlue is adding one-way Aer Lingus code-share operations to 33 U.S. markets this month. The deal, which expands a long- running partnership, adds to similar agreements JetBlue has with equity stakeholder Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA), Emirates, Japan Airlines Co., Hawaiian Airlines Inc. and South African Air.

American Airlines, US Airways unveil $11 billion merger | Reuters

American Airlines and US Airways Group said they plan to merge to form the world’s biggest airline with a combined equity value of $11 billion.

The widely expected merger caps a wave of consolidation that has helped put U.S. airlines on more solid financial footing.

The merged airline will be majority owned by creditors, unions and employees of American parent, AMR Corp, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2011.

The airline – to carry the American Airlines name – would be 2 percent larger than current No. 1 United Continental Holdings Inc in traffic, as measured by the number of miles flown by paying passengers worldwide.

“By utilizing American’s connecting network with penetration into smaller markets, and global alliance revenues, the new company could more effectively raise revenues and reduce costs, while addressing labor integration and capital problems,” Sterne Agee & Leach analyst Jeffrey Kauffman said in a note before the deal was announced on Thursday.

The new American will be based in Dallas-Fort Worth and will be headed by US Airways Chief Executive Doug Parker, who has long advocated industry consolidation. US Airways began its pursuit of a merger in early 2012.

Qantas, Emirates ink 10-year partnership – Businessweek

Qantas Airways Ltd. on Thursday signed a 10-year partnership deal with rival Emirates, ending a long-term relationship with British Airways in a bid by the Australian airline to boost its struggling international division.

Under the alliance, Qantas will move its hub for European flights from Singapore to Dubai, coordinate with Emirates on ticket prices and scheduling and apply a benefit-sharing model starting in April 2013. The deal is subject to regulatory approval.

Qantas said it will end its 17-year alliance with British Airways on March 31, 2013.

Neither Emirates nor Qantas will take equity in the other under the deal.
