A passenger plane carrying 152 people has crashed into the Margalla Hills near the Pakistani capital Islamabad, officials have said.

The accident occurred as the plane was attempting to land in Islamabad on Wednesday in bad weather.

“There were 146 passengers and six crewmen on board,” Mubarik Shah, a spokesman of the state-run Civil Aviation Authority, said.

“We are gathering information. We have no more details.”

Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said the plane that crashed belonged to a private airline.

Rescue workers were heading to the scene, where smoke was seen rising through heavy clouds, but difficult roads were complicating the operation.

The plane was coming from Turkey, via the Pakistani city of Karachi.
